PistachioThe pistachio, a member of the Anacardiaceae family, comes from a small three native to Iran. Being close to the Spice Route, the pistachio was soon grown throughout the Middle East and Europe, where it thrived in Syria, Turkey, Tunisia, India, Sicily and Afghanistan. Archeologists have found evidence which suggest the pistachio has been cultivated for nearly 9,000 years, and was a staple crop of the ancient city of Babylon. Today, the pistachio remains one of the most widely cultivated crops in the world, with significant crops being produced in California, Australia, the Middle East and China.

Key Nutrients

Pistachio contains a high degree of dietary fiber, protein and vitamin E. They contain a high amount of mono-unsaturated fats, a healthy type of triglyceride. Finally, they contain a great source of plant sterols and flavonoids, heart healthy nutrients which contain anti-oxidants.

Health Benefits

Vitamin E – Research has shown that vitamin E possesses anti-inflammatory effects that can combat arthritis, rheumatism, asthma, and other inflammatory disorders linked to chronic inflammation. Vitamin E also improves the body’s metabolic function.
